Hard lesson for Darul Takzim

MALAYSIA CUP: Club discovers money can't buy quick success
DARUL Takzim learned it the hard way that money can't buy success  in the Malaysia Cup.

Kelantan overturned a 4-2 defeat in the quarter-final first leg in Johor Baru by hammering Darul Takzim 6-1 in Kota Baru on Saturday for an 8-5 aggregate win.

Kelantan coach Bojan Hodak now believes his team can go all the way into the final and retain their title.

"We played near perfect football. I do not have anything negative to say as my players gave their best performance yesterday (Saturday). Our midfield and attack were superb but we need to defend better," said Hodak when contacted in Kota Baru yesterday.

Despite being linked with Penang and T-Team for the new season, Hodak is determined to part ways with Kelantan on a high note and wants to reward the fans with the Malaysia Cup.

"I believe the defeat in the first leg made my players more motivated and confident. I noticed these attributes in training before the match. They were giving 110 per cent in training and gave even more in the return leg.

"We perfected our attacking options in training and also worked on a strategy to stop Darul Takzim. We knew they were excellent in set-pieces and I instructed my players not to commit fouls near our penalty box."

The 42-year-old said Kelantan will win the title if they continue to play aggressive football.

"My players did not get tired and continued to attack Darul Takzim. It was a highly entertaining match but the fans here also attributed to our impressive performance.

"We are very strong at home and most teams do not like playing us here. Darul Takzim did not handle the situation too well and as a result were netted six times," said Hodak.

Kelantan captain Badhri Radzi and Norfarhan Muhd were in their element on Saturday but despite being consistent throughout the season, the duo are not being considered for the national team's campaign in the upcoming Asian Cup Qualifiers.

"Norfarhan and Badhri were exceptional but the latter only plays well at home. He was not too effective in the first leg but did well yesterday (Saturday). I think the stadium here motivates him," said Hodak.

Often being compared to Darul Takzim midfielder Safiq Rahim, who is also the national captain, Badhri has not earned many international caps.

"Badhri and Safiq are two different players with quality. Safiq did well in Johor Bahru but had a bad game in Kota Baru. Badhri is also the same," he said.

Hodak hopes his players will continue to focus and not get overconfident ahead of the two-leg semi-finals against Armed Forces on Oct 18 and 25.

"Kelantan and Forces are the two best teams in the competition. Forces are powerful in all departments and well-organised. It will be a tough match and we cannot afford to make many mistakes," Hodak added.

Coach pays tribute to hat-trick hero Salibasic

MUAMER Salibasic underlined his value to Sarawak when he notched his second hat-trick in three matches to power his team into the Malaysia Cup semi-finals in Kuching on Saturday.

The Premier League champions' 3-1 win over Sime Darby in the quarter-finals second leg, which saw Sarawak advance by the same aggregate score, set up a meeting with Pahang on Oct 19 and 26.

Salibasic took his tally in the competition to seven goals with his hat-trick on Saturday and joins Pahang's Matias Conti, Marlon Alex James of Armed Forces and Patrick Wleh of PKNS as the Malaysia Cup top scorers.

The Bosnian could not have been happier to fire Sarawak into the semi-finals for the first time since 2000.

"I feel so happy, I don't know what to say," said Salibasic after the match at the State Stadium. "I have no words to speak. Hopefully we can win the semi-finals also. I want to play in the final."

Sarawak had to come back from conceding a fourth-minute goal by Asrol Ibrahim but the predatory instincts of Salibasic, who scored his first Malaysia Cup hat-trick in a 6-1 Group D win against Perak in Kuching, ensured Sarawak made it through as he capped his treble with a brilliant first-time volley which should be a candidate for goal of the season.

"If he scores three goals then obviously he's a star," an admiring Sarawak coach Robert Alberts told Astro Arena. "It's not easy to score another hat-trick after the last one.

"We let in a soft goal, playing school football when they opened us up. At 1-0 behind at home, the advantage was with Sime Darby.

"I thought it was good the way we fought back and after that Sime Darby only had a couple of shots from distance."

Premier League runners-up Sime Darby were forced to field an local line up due to injuries to striker Karlo Primorac and midfielder Togaba Kontiwa which Alberts said made quite a difference.

"The difference was unfortunately Sime Darby could not play their two foreign players and we had our two foreigners," the Dutchman told RTM. "That was the difference and it paid off for us."

Though the visitors scored first, the under-strength Sime Darby, who along with Sarawak will be playing in next year's Super League, could not hold on to their early lead and coach Ismail Zakaria was not too happy with the officiating either.

"I am proud of the way my players played," Ismail, who fielded Yusoff Zainal Abidin in Primorac's absence to little effect, told RTM. "We failed to capitalise on our chances but there were several things I was not satisfied with.

"I thought the referee's performance was below par and disappointed me. That contributed to our defeat but overall, I think we gave our best.

"Without the imports, it was difficult and we missed three or four chances but there were other factors which disappointed us." By Devinder Singh

Tunku Ismail sedia undur jika tiada trofi

Johor Bahru: "Sekiranya saya gagal membimbing Johor menjulang sebarang piala musim depan, saya akan meletakkan jawatan selaku Presiden Persatuan Bolasepak Negeri Johor (PBNJ).
